Staying in NYC

Venue:

Mock NYC will take place at the Flatiron Institute, located at 162 E 5th Ave (entrance on 21st St). We will use the 2nd floor Ingrid Daubechies Auditorium (IDA) and atrium.

Thanks to the financial support of the Center for Computational Astrophysics through the Simons Foundation, there will be no registration fee, and breakfast, lunch, and coffee breaks during the meeting will be provided outside the IDA. We also expect to host an evening reception or dinner one day of the meeting.

You are also welcome to visit the CCA the Monday and/or Friday around the meeting, for our colloquium, NYC-area group meetings, and more. If you are interested in visiting the CCA Monday the 12th and/or Friday the 16th, please be sure to reach out to the organizers to confirm you are signed up and able to get into the building.

HOTELS:
We recommend the Freehand hotel on 23rd St x Lexington Avenue, which is a short walk from the CCA and currently has good rates for that week (~$170 per night; https://freehandhotels.com/ ). Book early! There are several other hotels in the area with rates less than $200 or $150 a night, as well.

Getting around NYC

Nearby trains (~ 5min) to the Flatiron Institute, by 23rd St, are the R, W, F, M, 6, and PATH. Union Square is a short, ~10min walk away to the L, 4, and 5 as well. There are also several buses that go south on 5th Ave and north on 6th Ave. There are rentable CitiBikes with parking stations very near the Flatiron, but we urge caution if cycling in NYC.

Google maps is very capable at navigating public transit in NYC. Additionally, this region of the city is very compact and walkable, with mostly flat streets. Look both ways when crossing any street, especially for electric bikes!

The NYC subway map can be found here . Outer boroughs are also very accessible; Lucia commutes from Jackson Heights, Queens in about 45 minutes to the CCA, and much of Brooklyn is equally close by. The NJ PATH trains with access to Jersey City and Newark can be found here.  Both the NYC subways/buses and NJ PATH can be paid with 'tap-to-pay' using a smartphone or credit card. The old yellow NYC subway cards are being phased out in favor of black tap-to-ride OMNY cards that can be refilled at most stations.

Here are more details about getting to and from NYC airports. We note that Newark airport in NJ has a direct NJTransit train to NY Penn station (~20 min walk), and is quite convenient to the CCA if you are arriving or leaving on a conference day.

A note on safety in NYC: as long as you are aware of your surroundings, NYC is very safe! Pickpockets are not really a thing here, and you can often see any rare trouble coming and move away from it. However, Lucia notes that parts of the Chelsea neighborhood can feel a little rough at night, and that extra-cautious folks can board subways near the middle to be closer to the MTA employees at the center of the trains. The local number for emergencies is 911.
